Buried leaks rarely surface directly above the pipe failure

Water can follow trenches, utility bedding, foundations, soil layers, and pavement edges. A wet lawn or cracked driveway may be part of the evidence, but it is not automatically the leak location.

The first task is ownership and isolation: determine whether the loss is on a customer-owned service, irrigation branch, private distribution main, well line, or another system. Public-main problems should be reported to the responsible utility.

Usage continues after indoor fixtures, appliances, irrigation, and known branches are shut down.

Rising water use

Bills or meter data show sustained consumption that normal occupancy cannot explain.

Pressure change

A closed, isolated section loses pressure or requires frequent pump operation.

Unusual green growth, soft soil, erosion, pavement changes, or recurring wet areas appear.

Audible water

Hissing, rushing, or vibration is heard near a service entry, valve, or buried route.

The pipe and site determine the right test

We work with copper, steel, ductile iron, PVC, HDPE, and other private water-system materials. Depth, pressure, pipe material, soil, background noise, access, and leak rate all affect what can be detected.

Listen for sound transmitted through soil, pavement, valves, fittings, and the pipe itself when the leak and site produce usable acoustic energy.

Leak correlation

Compares leak noise recorded at two accessible contact points to estimate a probable position on suitable pressurized lines.

ROUTE

Electronic line locating

Uses conductive or sonde-based locating where possible to estimate pipe routing before leak signals are interpreted.

TRACE

Tracer gas

Helps investigate suitable isolated lines—especially quiet leaks or plastic piping—by tracing a safe test-gas mixture toward the surface.

SCREEN

Acoustic data loggers

Useful on larger private, HOA, campus, or distribution systems to screen multiple contact points and identify areas for focused follow-up.

Surface testing has limits—and a good report explains them

Very small leaks, low pressure, deep lines, soft plastic, saturated soil, heavy traffic, pumps, mechanical noise, unknown routing, inaccessible valves, and multiple nearby utilities can weaken or distort evidence.

We compare independent observations and identify the strongest supported area. Final confirmation occurs when the line is exposed or repaired.

No. Leak detection looks for evidence of escaping water. Utility locating estimates the route of buried lines. Many projects require both, and excavation still requires the appropriate public and private utility-locating procedures.
Tracer gas can be useful for suitable isolated plastic lines when the gas can be introduced safely and the surface allows it to migrate and be detected. Site conditions and line configuration determine whether it is appropriate.
