Calling 811 is an important first step before excavation, but 811 does not typically locate every private utility line on a property. Many lines beyond the meter, behind buildings, between structures, or within private developments are the responsibility of the property owner.
Private utilities may include water service lines, sewer laterals, irrigation lines, private fire lines, electrical feeds to detached buildings, gas lines after the meter, communication lines, site lighting, pool lines, and other buried systems.
